Acoustics and vibration problems in buildings are rarely resolved by applying a single rule or detail. They unfold over time as architectural, structural, and mechanical decisions interact and evolve.
My approach is to understand the design intent early and to remain engaged as that intent is refined, tested, and ultimately built.
Many acoustic outcomes are determined long before details are finalized. Geometry, adjacencies, structure, and system choices all shape what is possible later.
Early involvement allows questions to be explored openly and alternatives considered without pressure. At this stage, the goal is not to finalize solutions, but to establish direction and understand constraints.
As a project progresses, assumptions give way to drawings, and drawings to construction details. Acoustic intent can be diluted or unintentionally altered during this process.
I track performance expectations as the design develops, reviewing changes and identifying where renewed attention may be needed. Addressing issues while they are still manageable helps avoid unnecessary complication later.
I use contemporary modeling, simulation, and measurement tools when they are appropriate to the question at hand. I am equally comfortable stepping away from the screen when other methods are more revealing.
In some cases, hand drafting or physical scale modeling provides insights that are difficult to obtain otherwise, particularly where spatial relationships and complex geometries are involved.
Acoustic performance often depends on execution in the field as much as on design.
When possible, I remain available during construction to review changes, respond to questions, and verify performance through testing. This continuity helps ensure that design intent survives
the many hand-offs inherent in building projects.
I limit the number of projects I take on each year. This allows me to remain closely involved and to work at a pace that supports careful thinking rather than quick answers.
